Changing how people treat you
One of the big problems for many people with disabilities is public attitude...the way other people deal with those of us who have disabilities. We know the cliché of people speaking louder when speaking to a blind person, for instance. People in wheel chairs feel more comfortable when the people they are talking with sit down, so that they are all on the same level.
We can use the Silva techniques to help influence other people's attitudes towards us in several ways:
You can use the 3-Scenes Technique to visualize and imagine people treating you the way you want to be treated.
You can program yourself to help you do and say the right things. You can also program yourself to project the right attitude so that the other person "gets it."
Also, very important, when you spend enough time at deep enough levels, and learn to cope with your own situation, learn to turn it into an advantage and change your inner attitude and your inner pictures, then you project this new positive "can-do" attitude instead of the "poor me" negative attitude, and this is much more pleasant to other people.
A very good salesman once sold a subscription to the Chicago Tribune to a blind woman who lived alone. She told him that she couldn't read the paper, and that there was nobody to read it to her. "I hardly ever get any visitors," she sighed. He could hear her loneliness, and suggested to her that the fact that she couldn't read the paper herself was a great reason to subscribe:
If she got this great big newspaper every day he suggested to her, and her friends knew that she subscribed to the newspaper and wanted to know what was in it, then they would have a reason to go and visit her...to read the stories to her.
It turned out that this worked. If she had been able to read the newspaper herself, she would have continued to live alone and seldom had friends come to visit. But now, because she had the disability and could not read, people had a reason to visit her, which was something she desperately wanted. When the salesman called back six months later to see how she was doing, she thanked him because at least one of her friends would come by each day to read the newspaper to her.
When you are projecting a negative attitude, one with bitterness, disappointment, helplessness, people are uncomfortable and do not want to be around you. When you have an attitude of optimism and joy, people love being around you.
